Weightlifting Show
June 14th through June 30th
Following on the heels of two other out-of-the-ordinary shows, vintage motorcycles and fine furniture, the Tatlock Gallery is presenting a collection of memorabilia from the heyday of New Bedford’s boxing and weightlifting era.
Jose Azevedo of California. Supplement to the National Police Gazette, no. 2019, Saturday, April 22, 1916. Clever Young Lightweight, and a Promising Candidate for Championship Honors.
From AHA! night, June 14th until Saturday, June 30th, come in and see some wonderful old posters and photographs of area boxers rescued from the old Boys & Girls Club in the now renovated Standard Times Building. Featured are a couple of signed promo posters of “Marvelous Marv” Marvin Hagler and some photographs and newspaper clippings dating back to the nineteen twenties.
A highlight of the show is a color plated York Olympic barbell set--all two hundred eighty-five pounds of it!
Armand Turgeon, New England lightweight weightlifting champion into the 1960's attended the opening of the show June 14th and says he is still lifting and competing at age 80.
The event also serves as a memorial to New Bedford boxer of the 1970's, Andrea McCoy, killed in an airplane crash in 1979.
Want to increase hand and arm strength? Just pick up one of our “Captains of Crush” heavy duty hand grippers. Made in different weight levels to accommodate beginners to the more advanced, these are not your ordinary wimpy plastic grippers. These babies are made to last a lifetime!
If hand grippers aren’t your thing, then create a conversation by wearing one of our 100 percent cotton, button down “York Barbell” logo shirts.
Several books on the strength sports are offered for the aspiring or aficionado. Check the “Shop” link on our website for more info.
Our retrospective includes an invitation to reestablish these sports as part of the new Boy's Club Boxing facility, and donations for this purpose are welcomed.
